NPR Smug Patrol noted this little item on today's ME:
Stevie and Gwen Tompkins' little soft drink conversation about reporting the news from East Africa. It's easy to spit venom over their American dumbass colonialist observations about cities with one paved road and other incredibly awful concepts. Gwen is laughingly casual while Stevie sounds like the naive ding-dong that he really is.
In high contrast is Philip Reeves' always intelligent, sensitive, measured, and reality-based coverage of India-oriented stories. But Reeves isn't part of the NPR mentality. He just works for them. For the time being. Hopefully, a better gig will come along for him.

I must say, it was a pleasant relief hearing Berry Brazelton on ME, Inskeep or no Inskeep. Brazelton being Brazelton, Inskeep couldn't muck it up.

But this relief of course could not last. When Stevie and this stand-in Rebecca person (is Renee still shopping in London?) were reading the Thursday letters, they both couldn't hide their own snottiness when responding to the 'sharp criticism' made of their ditzy coverage over a variety of subjects. I know they expect listeners to be good little kowtowers to the Entertaining Truth that emanates from NPR, but they seem genuinely surprised that some people go to the trouble of flipping the crap back where it came from, so they respond with their own kind of limp mockery.

One more ME boil to be lanced:
When Inskeep (or heck, was it Rebecca? - it's so very early in the morning...) did the intro to the latest Gonzo story, emphasis was put on his having to appear before the Judiciary Committee AGAIN, addressing the attorney firings AGAIN, etc. To me this emphasis was implying that poor Gonzo is being unnecessarily harassed by those mean senators.
Then we have to hear Bright Young Thing Ari Shapiro's trenchant analysis in a nasal-y fussy voice which is only eclipsed by the equally awful David Welna.
AAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many times have I mock-mimicked these totally cool dudes after their little sign-offs?
I repeat, AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHH!!!!

OK, this is my last one today. For you fans of my good buddy Paul's obscene, unjust, and really quite icky 'smear campaign', check out this excellent and helpful blog:

Porter, Rebecca Roberts is Cokehead Roberts' offspring, who apparently didn't fall far from the tree.

Holy smokes! Thanks for the reassurance that the NPR Imperatives will be safe for generations to come!

Current favorite quote regarding Paul Wolfowitz' smear campaign:
"If we now live in a world where a guy cannot plan a failed war and then get a cushy tax free job for his girlfriend, I'm not sure I want to go on living."

And speaking of Woofie, this afternoon's ATC had an opinion piece by some right wing hack who blamed Woofie for not protecting himself from all the mean libs at the World Bank. I want me a gig at a right wing think tank, I'd even bring my on crayons. This guy came complete with the "he took us to war to protect us from terrorists" crap.

The re-writing of Blair's history began toady on ATC. Siegel inteviewed someone from the London Times, who, although disappointed with the Poodle, re-wrote the history of the Iraq war as one of concern for the WMDs. Bob Siegel, apparently, has never heard of the Downing Street Memo
